Course Description

The Class - Theater is a semester-long course for students interested in acting, singing and/or set design. Throughout the semester students will practice for a performance usually chosen by the teacher before the class begins.

Expectations - It is expected that every student will work seriously to make the production a success. Students are expected to attend class, participate in class and complete assignments. My major expectation is that you learn your lines and know your motivation. We need every student for a play to be successful. All it takes is one student to hurt the show. Therefore, if you do not learn your lines, you will be taken out of the production and assigned to a study hall.

Grading - Students will be graded in three areas: class participation (25%); quizzes (50%); and final performance (25%). Students must take part in the final performance to pass the class.

Class Participation - You will do one of three things during theater class: (1) Run lines with one or more students; (2) Perform rehearsed scenes for the rest of the class; (3) Take part in improvisational games. You will always be occupied in theater class. At times, you may have the chance to watch your peers perform. During those times, give your classmates all of your support and attention. If you are talking loudly or doing other homework, you will impede the rehearsal of other students and probably hurt their feelings. Such behavior is not acceptable.

Quizzes - As stated above, students are responsible for learning all of their lines before the performance. To ensure that these lines are memorized in a timely fashion, I will give "quizzes" at specific intervals to be announced. During these quizzes
students will perform pages of dialogue for me without the script, and I will grade accordingly. My expectations will be announced and discussed in class before each quiz.

Schedules- We will have extra rehearsals in the middle of May. Check your sports schedules. Class comes first. We will work out an arrangement with your coaches; however, there will be after-school rehearsals four weeks prior to the performance.

Remember - Theater is a fun class in which we all work together to put on what will hopefully be a successful and professional performance. We depend on each and every person to make the class work. Our last performance (Much Ado About Nothing) was one of our finest because of the cooperation and hard work of the students involved. Let's keep up that great level of dedication and effort.
